About this Case

The execution of Mr. Mohammad A. was reported by the correspondent of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) and published in the Jomhuri Eslami daily (web edition, June 9, 2002).

The validity of the criminal charges brought against this defendant cannot be ascertained in the absence of the basic guarantees of a fair trial. International human rights organizations have drawn attention to reports indicating that the Islamic Republic’s authorities have brought trumped-up charges against their political opponents and executed them for drug trafficking, sexual, and other criminal offences. Each year, Iranian authorities sentence to death hundreds of alleged common criminals, following judicial processes that fail to meet international standards. The exact number of people convicted based on trumped-up charges is unknown.

Charges

The defendant was charged with murdering, in September 24, 2001, a retired Revolutionary Guard and a war veteran named Abbasali Qarebaqi by throwing acid in his face and then setting his car on fire. Based on the report, Mr. Qarebaqi, who transferred passengers in his car for a living, died in Emdadi Hospital 24 hours after the defendant's assault.

Evidence of guilt

The judge in charge of Mr. A.'s case told IRNA Correspondent that the murdered individual had told everything to the authorities before dieing in the hospital: "Included in his remarks was the fact that he had heard the voice of a certain individual and was positive that the defendant had been responsible for the assault. After arresting this individual and intense investigations by criminal investigators and Intelligence Security Officials of Neyshabur's Revolutionary Guards Headquarters, two others, including Mr. A., were arrested and the unclear parts of the case became clear." There is no information available on how it became clear that Mr. A. was the one responsible for murder.
